Massachusetts: The governor and council summon William Milborne, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Boston and a former resident of Bermuda and Maine, to appear before them to respond to rumors that he has been circulating two petitions attacking the government’s handling of the witchcraft cases in Salem with the intent of presenting them to the newly convened provincial assembly.  The petitions accuse the Court of Oyer and Terminer of jailing several prominent people of good reputation based only on spectral evidence given by the afflicted persons and ask the assembly to put a stop to this.

Milborne duly appears before the council and admits to having written the petitions.  He is ordered to post  a bond of 200 pounds for his good behavior or be jailed, and he chooses to pay the money and keep quiet from now on.
